Creating your first QR code

Step-by-step guide to generating a dynamic QR code in Unqode SmartQR.

Making a QR code in Unqode SmartQR takes a couple of minutes the first time and closer to thirty seconds after that. Here's the actual path from an empty account to a code you can print, screen-by-screen.

  1. 1Create a free account. Go to the sign-up page — no credit card needed. The Free plan gives you 3 dynamic QR codes and 500 tracked scans a month, which is plenty for testing the product before you commit to anything.
  2. 2Click Create. Once you're in the dashboard, there's a Create button in the sidebar (and again in the top bar on desktop). Click it and a small dropdown opens with two options — choose QR Code (the other is Business Card, which is a different flow entirely).
  3. 3Pick a QR type. You land on the Create QR Code page, which opens with a grid of type options. Website URL covers the majority of use cases, but vCard, WiFi, Email, SMS, WhatsApp, Phone, and Text are also available on every plan. Anything shown with a small lock icon and a "Pro" badge — Landing Page, App Store, PDF, and a handful of others — needs a paid plan; clicking a locked type opens an upgrade prompt rather than blocking you silently.
  4. 4Enter your content. The form changes shape depending on the type you picked — a single URL field for Website URL, separate fields for network name and password for WiFi, and so on. Give the code a name too; it's how you'll find it again in a dashboard that may eventually hold dozens of codes.
  5. 5Customise the design (optional). The next step lets you apply a colour template, upload a logo, or add a frame with call-to-action text. None of this is required — a plain black-on-white code scans exactly as reliably as a styled one.
  6. 6Save and download. Click Create QR Code to save it to your dashboard, then use the Download button to export it — PNG on every plan, SVG and PDF once you're on Pro or Business.

Name your codes something you'll recognise in six months — "Summer flyer 2026 — homepage" tells you a lot more than "QR Code 4" once you've made a dozen of them.

If a type you want is locked, it isn't broken — it's gated to Pro or Business. See what's included in the Free plan for the exact list of what's open at each tier.
