By default, a new dynamic QR code gets a random short code — something like unqode.com/smartqr/r/x7q2p9 — that works perfectly well but means nothing to anyone who reads it. A custom slug swaps that for something you'd actually want printed, like unqode.com/smartqr/r/summer-sale.
Setting one
- 1Open the QR code in the editor — this is a Pro-plan feature.
- 2Find the Custom Short URL field.
- 3Type your preferred slug — lowercase letters, numbers, and hyphens, 3 to 40 characters long.
- 4The field checks availability in real time as you type; a taken slug shows immediately so you can try something else without waiting for a save attempt to fail.
- 5Save the QR code.
The rules
- Lowercase letters (
a–z), numbers (0–9), and hyphens (-) only - 3 to 40 characters
- Globally unique — no two QR codes across the whole platform can share a slug, which is what the live availability check is confirming
Change the slug after the QR code is already printed and the old redirect URL stops resolving — the printed pattern encodes the original URL permanently, and a slug change doesn't retroactively update it. Only change a slug before you send anything to print.
