Unqode SmartQR works out the device, operating system, browser, and approximate location of every scanner automatically, purely from the request that hits the redirect server — there's nothing to install on your own site to get this.
Device type
Device type comes from the User-Agent header the scanner's browser sends, sorted into four buckets: Android, iOS (iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch), Desktop (Windows, macOS, or Linux), and Other for anything that doesn't fit cleanly. This breakdown appears both on an individual QR code's devices tab and, aggregated across all your codes, on the account-wide Analytics page.
Operating system and browser
These two are more granular than device type, and they only surface on the account-wide Analytics page rather than on a single code's detail tabs — so if you're looking for "how many scans came from Safari" and can't find it on a specific QR code's page, that's expected; check Analytics in the sidebar instead.
Country and city
Location is looked up in real time from the scanner's IP address at the moment of the scan. Country-level lookups are generally reliable; city-level detection is inherently coarser and varies by region and network provider, so treat city data as a useful signal rather than something to build precise decisions on.
Someone scanning through a VPN shows up located at the VPN server, not their actual location — that's a limitation of IP-based geolocation itself, not something specific to this or any QR platform.
What's stored, and what isn't
Unqode SmartQR doesn't keep raw scanner IP addresses around after the fact — they're hashed for deduplicating unique scans and for rate-limiting, rather than stored as plain text, and the location lookup only ever produces a country and city, not anything more personally identifying.
