Use High (H) error correction, not the default
A billboard code lives outdoors for weeks or months. Weathering, dirt, shadows from nearby structures, and fading all chip away at how much of the code a scanner can read. High error correction gives it the most room to still work despite all of that, and it's the format where this setting matters more than anywhere else.
Test the printed code at true distance and lighting
A code that looks perfectly fine on a screen mockup can still fail at 3+ metres in bright sunlight — screen contrast and print contrast under direct sun are not the same thing. Print a proof, mount it or hold it at the real distance, and scan it in daylight before committing to the full print run.
Give it a bigger, more visible call to action
People walk or drive past a billboard; they don't stop and study it the way they might a flyer in their hand. A bare code with small text is easy to miss entirely from a moving vehicle. The CTA needs to be legible at the same distance as the code itself, not just present.
Confirm the size against the actual viewing distance
Billboard placements vary — a roadside board seen from a car at speed is a different problem from one mounted above a pedestrian plaza. Don't rely on a generic minimum; check the real distance people will view it from and size accordingly before the design is finalised.
