QR codes for stickers, sized to survive a small surface

Stickers give you the least room of any print format, and often the toughest surface — curved, glossy, or exposed to the weather. Here's how to size, finish, and place the code so it still scans.

A sticker has the smallest surface area of any common print format, which means every millimetre of size matters and there's rarely room to spare for decoration. It's also the format most likely to end up on a curved, glossy, or weathered surface.

Most sticker QR codes that fail to scan fail for one of three reasons: the code was printed too small for the surface it's meant to be scanned at close range, it was wrapped around a curve that distorted its proportions, or a glossy finish threw back enough glare outdoors to blind the camera. All three are avoidable if you plan for them before the sticker goes to print.

How big should the code be?

The closest sizing analogue for most stickers is a product label: 2 × 2 cm is the practical minimum, read from roughly 5–15 cm away. That maps to the general rule print professionals use for any format: the code should be at least 1/10th of the maximum distance it needs to be scanned from — a code read from 15 cm away needs to be at least 1.5 cm wide, though 2 cm is the safer practical floor once print tolerances are accounted for.

What actually gets a sticker code scanned

Skip the centre logo on a small sticker

Logo embedding works well on a flyer or poster because there's room to spare. On a small sticker there usually isn't — covering the middle of an already-tiny code drops its effective data density more than it would on a larger print, and it's often the difference between a code that scans and one that doesn't.

Keep it flat — curved surfaces distort the pattern

A code wrapped around a bottle, pipe, or any curved product edge gets stretched out of proportion, and a scanner reads proportion as much as it reads the individual squares. Flat placement matters far more for stickers than for any other print format.

Matte laminate over gloss for anything used outdoors

A glossy finish looks sharper in a photo, but it reflects direct light straight back at a phone camera, which is exactly what causes a scan to fail in bright conditions. Matte laminate cuts that glare and is the safer default anywhere lighting isn't controlled.

Weatherproof anything that won't stay indoors

A sticker on a delivery box, an outdoor bin, or street signage takes rain, sun, and handling that a poster or flyer never does. Laminated, weatherproof stock keeps the print — and the contrast the scanner depends on — intact after weeks of exposure.
